A smart sensor is a sensing device that uses a microcontroller to generate more accurate information than standard sensors. The evolution of microcontroller technology toward lower prices, small size, and high performance opens the door for smart sensors in others applications such as discrete industrial sensors. It is only a question of time before the same trend will also be seen in the commercial sensor area. There are four main areas where smart sensors differ from standard sensors by adding functionality: process data manipulation, diagnostic information, configuration capabilities, and information storage.
